Platform Resiliency and Stacking Technologies

The Cisco Catalyst 9200 Series switches are engineered for high availability and business continuity. They incorporate several resiliency features to ensure that the network remains operational and robust. Key among these are redundant power supplies, intelligent PoE+ capabilities, and advanced stacking technologies.

Power Supplies and Intelligent PoE+

Catalyst 9200 Series switches support dual field-replaceable power supplies. Each switch ships with one default power supply, and a second identical power supply can be purchased with the initial order or added later. This second power supply can provide redundancy, ensuring uninterrupted operation if one power supply fails, or it can deliver additional power for PoE+ ports, increasing the total PoE budget.

The switches also feature Smart PoE+ capabilities:

  • IEEE 802.3at PoE+: Supporting up to 30W per port, PoE+ allows the switches to power a wide range of devices, such as Cisco IP phones, Cisco Aironet® wireless access points, and other standards-compliant PoE+ end devices. This reduces the total cost of ownership by eliminating the need for wall power for each PoE-enabled device. PoE+ power allocation on the Catalyst 9200 Series is dynamic, with power mapping scaling up to 1440W.
  • Perpetual PoE: This feature maintains PoE+ power to connected devices during a switch reload. This is critical for endpoints like medical devices or IoT-powered lighting systems, ensuring they remain operational even if the switch needs to restart.
  • Fast PoE: When power is restored to a switch, Fast PoE begins delivering power to endpoints without waiting for the operating system to fully load. This accelerates endpoint startup times.

Table 3 details the available PoE+ power per model with primary and secondary power supplies.

Cisco IOS XE The Foundation for Modern Networking

Cisco IOS XE, the operating system powering the Catalyst 9200 Series, redefines network automation, configuration, operation, and monitoring. Cisco’s automation solutions are open, standards-based, and extend across the entire network lifecycle. This powerful software provides a rich set of features that enable businesses to build resilient, secure, and intelligent networks.

Key automation mechanisms within Cisco IOS XE include:

  • Automated device provisioning: This capability automates the process of software image upgrades and configuration file installation when switches are first deployed. Cisco offers turn-key solutions like Plug and Play (PnP) and Preboot Execution Environment (PXE) to facilitate effortless deployment.
  • API-driven configuration: Modern network switches like the Catalyst 9200 Series support API-driven configuration. It enables a wide range of automation capabilities and provides robust open APIs via NETCONF and RESTCONF using YANG data models for both off-the-shelf and custom external tools to automate network resource provisioning.
  • Granular visibility: Model-driven telemetry allows for streaming data from the switch to a destination. The data to be streamed is identified through subscription to a dataset in a YANG model. The subscribed dataset is streamed out to the destination at specified intervals. Cisco IOS XE also enables the push model, providing near real-time network monitoring for rapid fault detection and resolution.
  • Seamless software upgrades and patching: Cisco IOS XE supports hot patching with reboot on Catalyst 9200 Series switches. This allows for fixes for critical bugs and security vulnerabilities between regular maintenance releases, eliminating the need to wait for the next maintenance version to apply a patch. A reboot is required for the patch to take effect.
  • Trustworthy solutions built with Cisco Trust Anchor Technologies: These technologies provide a secure foundation for Cisco products. On Catalyst 9200 Series switches, they ensure hardware and software authenticity, establish supply chain trust, and effectively mitigate man-in-the-middle attacks on software and firmware. Trust Anchor capabilities include image signing, secure boot, and the Cisco Trust Anchor module.
  • High availability: The Catalyst 9200 Series supports several high-availability features:
    • Cross-Stack EtherChannel: Provides the ability to configure Cisco EtherChannel technology across different members in a stack for high resiliency.
    • IEEE 802.1s Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol (MSTP): Enables rapid Spanning Tree convergence independent of Spanning Tree timers and also offers the benefit of Layer 2 load balancing and distributed processing.
    • Per-VLAN Rapid Spanning Tree (PVRST+): Allows for rapid Spanning Tree (IEEE 802.1w) reconvergence on a per-VLAN Spanning Tree basis, providing simpler configuration than MSTP. In both MSTP and PVRST+ modes, stacked units behave as a single Spanning Tree node.
    • Switch-port auto-recovery (“error-disable” recovery): Automatically attempts to reactivate a link that is disabled due to a network error.

This comprehensive software suite ensures that the Catalyst 9200 Series switches are not only equipped for today’s networking challenges but are also prepared for future innovations, protecting investments and simplifying IT operations.
